Procedures Offered

We offer the following surgical procedures in addition to our other services:

Oral Pathology. Oral pathology is the diagnosis and treatment of health conditions affecting the tissues of the mouth and jaw. Some of these conditions require surgical treatment, which is a service we provide.

Facial Trauma (Fractures). Trauma to the face often results in injuries including broken bones in the jaw and face. We provide treatment for broken facial bones.

Frenectomies. Some infants are born tongue-tied or lip-tied, where the oral connective tissues are tethered, or too tight for adequate movement. Frenectomy is the procedure used to loosen the connective tissues to improve eating and speech development.

  • Lingual Frenectomy. The tissue connecting your tongue to your mouth is the lingual frenum. If you lift the tip of your tongue to touch the roof of your mouth, you can see and feel that lingual frenum. While the length can vary from person to person, some people are born with uncomfortably short lingual frenums (AKA tongue ties) that inhibit their ability to eat, drink, and speak. It  most commonly is diagnosed in infancy by a pediatrician due to problems with breastfeeding. However, the frenum could develop and require intervention during adult years due to the patient's growth.
  • Maxillary Frenectomy. If you lift your upper lip, you can see the labial frenum. A maxillary or labial frenectomy addresses problems with the soft tissue connecting your upper lip to your upper gum. People with abnormally short labial frenums may not be able to lift their upper lip (AKA lip tied) and it may create a gap between their upper teeth. Maxillary frenectomies make it easier to clean and care for the front teeth to prevent oral complications, like gum disease. Gaining more movement of the upper lip also helps with speech and facial expressions, especially smiling.

Frequently Asked Questions

What conditions does oral pathology treat?
Oral pathology may address oral cancer, herpes simplex virus type 1, candidiasis (thrush), black hairy tongue, and other oral health conditions. Treatment can be as simple as removing irritants from oral use, monitoring the area without treatment to see if it is an injury opposed to a pathology concern,or starting medications and monitoring the area. Sometimes surgical intervention is necessary for sample collection or excision of tissues or growths. Additional prolonged monitoring is also generally a part of treatment to ensure the area has healed or is not a concern in the future.
How long is the recovery process for a Frenectomy?
Given that it’s a straightforward procedure, frenectomy recovery is not usually difficult. In two or three days the patient should be able to return to normal activity and eating habits as tolerated. Frenectomy recovery involves carefully choosing the foods being ingested for a few days to avoid getting food trapped in the area as it is healing. There will be some discomfort that should be manageable with over-the-counter medication and most patient’s compare it to a pizza burn.
How is a broken jaw treated?
Treatment of a fractured jaw is largely dependent on the severity of the fracture. Diagnostic procedures will be done in order to ID the location and severity of the break. Treatment can be as minimal as regular check ins with your surgeon and minor lifestyle changes until the fracture has had time to heal. More substantial fractures can require surgical intervention to wire the jaw shut to reduce movement or reconstruction and stabilization of the jaw and bone fragments.
What oral surgery procedures are covered by insurance?
Insurance coverage depends on the necessity of the procedure and the specifications of your insurance plan. Contact your provider for specific information about your benefits or contact us today for a consultation.
